Demo Day!

As the boys said, it’s demo day! to remind you of what we started with here is a before picture.

We started the day removing the kitchen cabinets. It seems the cabinets were put in by someone who wasn’t familiar with cabinet installation. Some cabinets were barely held on by two screws, others were nailed and screwed to the wall and other cabinets. We had fun playing the game “what is still holding this?”

Michael and dad removed the bottom cabinets, countertops, and dishwasher while mom and I scrubbed the refrigerator that will be moved to the basement for extra drinks.

As they were finishing up the kitchen my dad asked Michael for his crow bar.

Michael: “For what?”

dad : “Where’s the crow bar?”

<Michael gives dad the crow bar, dad pries up a piece of the flooring>

Michael laughed and said: “Welp, I guess we are getting new floors.”

The floors had several areas of damage from the sun. They were scratched and broken and the edges weren’t finished off very cleanly. Now we can replace  them with the wider planks to match the flooring upstairs.

The sub floor was an inch and a half thick tongue and groove and very solid which was a pleasant surprise.

Removing the floors was back breaking work. We got about half of the downstairs finished. The installer was staple happy. The furthest spacing was three inches apart with some right next to each other.

Here are some photos of how we left it for the day.

We are glad we were able to get so much done before the winter storm hits us this evening.

Our kitchen remodel will feature Kraftmaid cabinets in midnight blue suede. I’m really excited to try a painted cabinet. Our previous homes always had stained cabinets. We decided to use quartz countertops and selected a gorgeous white quartz titled peaceful. Copper hardware and dishes will serve as accents in the space. Stay tuned to see how it all comes together.
