Gravel Driveway {with new updates!}

(Scroll to the * to see updates only)

Our new gravel driveway was recently finished.

They started by grading the hill to make the driveway easier to climb. Unfortunately not long into the process, they found a water line and needed to move the driveway further to the right than we originally intended.

They were able to level everything out to make a pleasant ride up the mountain,

The driveway worked beautifully for about two weeks, and then the rain…

There is a spring that runs underneath the driveway at the very bottom. We knew it may cause problems and it is.

Damage caused by hidden spring.

We need to dig out this section and put down a larger rock base. We will dig some sort of drainage to route the water out of the area. In the meantime, we were able to get a mailbox in.

Currently the lake is so high the water is spilling onto the road.

We won’t be able to get out there to fix the driveway until it dries up so hopefully that will happen soon. In the meantime, happy Valentine’s Day!

* Updates

We finally had enough consecutive dry days to repair the part of our driveway that covered a spring. First, the grader dug all the way down to solid ground. We moved the earth from here to our lake lot where we are putting in a UTV parking pad.

Next, he brought in riprap rock. I put my hand in the photo so you can see the size of these rocks. We will also place these along our shoreline on the lakefront lot to prevent soil erosion. He put a thick enough base to allow the spring to flow through the rock without puddling at the top,

Riprap base to fix flooded driveway.

Finally, he brought in 4-6 inch rock and then a layer of crusher run to smooth out the area.

This fix has held up through several heavy rains now. I love it!

While we had our grader out here, we decided to expand the parking pad at the top of the driveway.

We now have room for four cars across and delivery drivers seem to appreciate the extra turn around space.
Hubby found this cast iron water cover in Virginia. We are going to dig it out and have it even with the grade of the road once we are ready to pave it. The old cover was plastic and visitors regularly ran over it.

I’m so happy with our finished driveway! It is an easier, more attractive way to approach our lake home.
